Three Americans are about to go on trial for crossing the border into Iran allegedly on a spy mission. The three young adults were (they say) simply on a trek in Iraq and accidentally ventured across the border. Now they are the center of an international incident and pawns in the nuclear standoff between Iran and basically the rest of the world. This standoff is potentially the most dangerous, explosive situation in the world today.
What were they thinking (or not)? undoubtedly there are more scenic, better distinguished places in the world to trek than a country which has been at war for half a decade (land mines, terrorist attacks, and all) - in a border area with one of the most repressive regimes in the world? If you recall, it was just nine months ago that two American women just happened to cross the border into North Korea (accidentally of course) in arguably the only more repressive regime in the world than Iran - North Korea (in a similar nuclear standoff with the world).
News North Korea
Just how absorbed in themselves are these Americans to think of their own little adventures first and not reconsider the consequences of their actions - either they crossed the borders deliberately on not. They should have never exposed themselves (and our country) to these totally unwarranted dangers. Think of the millions of dollars of government and news media resources that have been spent needlessly surface these incidents. Both of these regimes love the naiveté of Americans for use as pawns to get attention off the real issues of the day - and we never seem to disappoint them with opportunities afforded by our self-absorbed citizenry. Our State group has spent thousands of man hours (and $$$) on the North Korean incursion earlier this year and now is doing the same on this most recent occurrence, at a time when much bigger, world encompassing issues are at hand. The world's news media is also taking its eyes (and those of the world) off such disastrous situations like Un backed Congolese soldiers murdering hundreds (or thousands) of innocent civilians in Africa, because of this ill-conceived adventure. I would like to know what government official in his or her right mind would even issue a visa for these trekkers to enter a country at war?
Our culture now breeds the "blame game," where person or something is all the time at fault for our actions or mishaps. For the past any of decades (much) of our youth has been raised to not take full accountability for their actions. If they get bad grades in school, it's the school or our educational principles in normal at fault - not that they didn't study or were too self-absorbed in their own thing, with "hovering parents" to take on the challenges they should be facing and solving themselves.
Don't get me wrong, I feel very sorry for the families of these trekkers being held in Iran and what they must be going through this holiday season. But the world's attention should be focused elsewhere on much, much more important issues - than what these three set themselves up for. Media attention is just throwing gasoline on the fire. If there was no media attention Iran wouldn't waste their time with a trial. They would simply boot the three out of the country.
