Considering a visit to North Korea?

Should you decree to take a trip to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea you will most likely be given three choices for television viewing: North Korea Chosun Tv, Mansu Hill Tv (Pyongyang only) and Chosun schooling and Culture Tv. All three of these are used to spread government propaganda throughout the land.

Now don't get me wrong. I know that our hundreds of channels are used for propaganda of a sort too. American Tv propagates "carnal knowledge," violence, various political opinions, entertainment, and of course a safe bet division of decent information. But in North Korea all the messages town on the cult of personality formed decades ago.

Radio has only one hub for local consumption. Radios are all fixed to receive this one channel. Correcting your radio to receive intake from surrounding nations is punishable. And the monotone message is the same. About 34% of the programming praises one of the two Kims. 28% encourages workers to work even harder than they do. 17% preaches the Juche (sel-reliance) theme. 12% is about the poor South Koreans and their suffering, or denigration of the Seoul government.

Other North Korean radio is sent elsewhere, in general to South Korea. One airs beautiful music with compassionate helpings of commentary of South Korean ways. Another, with more criticism, absolutely claims to be broadcasting from South Korea using South Korean dissidents. To sound genuine, the broadcasters are a compound of defectors and the abducted.

Up to a fourth of the citizenry has "fixed" their radios. Am and shortwave signals are getting through in spite of the sterilized radios and the effort to jam signals. The people hear. At first they have issue believing, but eventually, truth gets through and sets people free. The knowledgeable often leave when they comprehend how long they have heard things that don't reconcile to the real world.

As Christians, our greater desire is that Koreans hear the "Truth" known as Jesus and are set free body soul and spirit. Let us not grow discouraged in our prayers and efforts and gifts. Whom the Son sets free is absolutely free!
